The University of Wisconsin athletic department is investigating a recent leak of private photos and video of its women’s volleyball players.

While the athletic department did not offer up any details of the leaked material in its statement, it did say that the pictures and video were not intended to be made public. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, one of the photos obtained by the outlet appears to have been taken after the team won the Big Ten title last November, showing members of the team with their sports bras lifted.

Similarly, the Wisconsin State Journal reported that the photos were taken from inside the team’s locker room.

“UWPD is not investigating the volleyball student-athletes for wrongdoing in this matter,” the statement said. “Our top priority is supporting our student-athletes and we are providing them with the appropriate services and resources.”

They called the leak a “significant and wrongful invasion” of the athletes’ privacy, with University of Wisconsin police investigating multiple crimes, “including potential violations of university policies and criminal statutes.”

According to the university, the athletes contacted the police upon becoming aware of the leak.

On Thursday, University of Wisconsin police spokesman Mac Lovicott confirmed the investigation.

Wisconsin won its first national title last year, and is currently ranked fifth in the country with a 13-3 record (7-1 Big Ten). The Badgers are set to play Michigan State on Friday.

How the Paralympics work

An international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities, the Paralympics operates separately from theOlympic Gamesdespite sharing a host country as well as most venues. Some sports — likeswimming, track, basketball, andvolleyball— have direct Olympic counterparts, while other sports likebocciaandgoalballare unique to the Paralympics.

According to theUS Olympic and Paralympic Committee, para-sport athletes must have at least one of these 10 eligible underlying conditions to qualify for the Games: impaired muscle power, impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, vision impairment, or intellectual impairment.

Athletes then square off indifferent classificationsbased on the type of disability they have — visual, physical, or intellectual — as well as how much their disability impacts their ability to compete in the event.

Stacked field means big choice for award voters

With so many deserving candidates,2024's MVP award-winnercould come down to whichever factors voters value the most.

Chawingasits first in the league in goals scored and second in assists this season, finding the back of the net against nine different teams along the way. But Orlando forwardBarbra Bandaisn't far behind. Banda scored one less goal in four fewer games played than Chawinga, all while guiding the Pride to an unprecedented unbeaten streak.

Bethunelikely has Rookie of the Year on lock, but she's also on the MVP watchlist with five goals and 10 assists in her debut season.
